Comments on allowing third parties:
Unless compelling reason and agreement.
When I first learned of Mediation back in 1986 during the Farm crisis, I was extremely skeptical of its value in resolving conflict. Then I participated in mediations and experienced a complete change of mind. When Difficult issues were discussed with respect, and each party came prepared, decisions, often with very creative solutions, were able to be reached in a timely manner and at a fraction of the cost of going to trial. But the biggest benefit was the emotional relief which was evident for each of the parties when decisions were reached rather than allowed to drag on. The best solutions are those created by the parties in reliance on the good counsel of their attorneys and aided by a skilled mediator.

Settlement Conference Mediator:
I have been engaged in the practice of law for the past thirty-three years. My original mediation training took place in 2004. This year I have obtained Certification in Aging Issues Mediation. I am presently a Roster mediator with regard to Divorce, Dissolution, Modifications and Contempts in the Sixth Judicial District and in Black Hawk County. Aside from mediation, I am engaged in the General Practice of law, including Guardianship and Conservatorship Matters, Social Security Disability, Family Law, Juvenile matters, adoptions, terminations and Probate. My past experience includes Trial Practice including litigation of personal injury, malpractice, product liability and matters. For three years during the Farm crisis in Iowa I was a Regional Attorney with the Farm Credit System. It was during that time I first became familiar with mediation as an alternative to resolving serious legal and personal matters through litigation. I am a member of the Iowa State Bar Association and the Linn County Bar Association and serve as a member of the Linn County Bar Board of Governors. For several years I have served as Member of the Marion Planning and Zoning Commission, as well as on the advisory boards of The Salvation Army of Cedar Rapids, Marion Senior Living Community And Cedar Rapids Birthright.
